Terms of Business
A practical guide to quotations, disclosure, payments and the documents that govern your marine insurance arrangement.
Scope of these terms
These terms explain the digital enquiry and placement process offered through MarineEnergyCover. Read them alongside the terms supplied for your particular transaction. They do not replace a quotation, policy wording, schedule, endorsement or authorised confirmation of cover. Different insurers and jurisdictions may use different contractual terms.
Know the parties to your arrangement
Before accepting a quotation, check the legal contracting entity, the insurer or insurers, the role of each intermediary and who has authority to bind cover. Check the applicable regulator and permissions against the named entity, rather than relying on a brand name alone. Ask for any missing disclosure before proceeding.
The transaction documents should explain remuneration or fees, any relevant conflicts, how premium money is handled, the applicable complaints route and the governing law. A network relationship or mention of another insurer does not itself establish that insurer's participation in your policy.
Presenting your marine risk
Provide accurate and complete answers and supporting documents. Relevant information can include the vessel's identity, value, flag, classification, age, ownership, management, trading areas, cargo, operating arrangements and previous losses. Explain uncertainties rather than guessing, and tell the team about material changes before and during the proposed cover.
Where UK non-consumer insurance law applies, duties of fair presentation may be relevant. Your exact duties and the consequences of an omission or misstatement depend on the governing law and policy. Ask for clarification if you are unsure what to disclose.
Estimates, quotations and acceptance
You can use the calculator or start an application without prior underwriting approval. Calculator figures are indicative estimates, not binding quotations. The selected product, insured value, coverage period, rate and optional additions determine the displayed calculation; taxes, fees and final terms are confirmed in the formal quotation.
Check each quotation's validity period, insured parties, limits, deductibles, geographical scope, exclusions, conditions and outstanding requirements. For war-risk cover, check the exact period, territorial provisions and cancellation wording. Request clarification before accepting terms that differ from your instructions.
An application, portal status, estimate or payment receipt is not proof that cover has started. Rely on the authorised binding confirmation and its stated effective date and time. Where several insurers participate, review each share and the applicable contractual wording.
Premiums and payment instructions
Use the payment instructions issued for your specific authenticated payment request. Verify the beneficiary, currency, amount and reference. Independently confirm unexpected changes through an established contact route before transferring money. Never rely solely on a new email with replacement bank details.
The quotation and transaction terms govern payment deadlines, fees, taxes, instalments and any consequences of non-payment. Do not assume funds are held under a particular client-money or trust arrangement unless that arrangement is expressly disclosed for your transaction.
Documents, changes and renewal
Review issued documents promptly and report discrepancies. Keep copies of the agreed wording, schedule, endorsements and confirmation. Ask the team about a change in ownership, management, value, cargo or route before assuming it is covered. A requested change only takes effect as confirmed under the applicable contract.
Renewal is a new consideration of the risk unless your contract expressly provides otherwise. Do not assume automatic renewal or uninterrupted cover from an earlier estimate or reminder.
Claims and cancellation
Follow the notice, evidence and cooperation requirements in your actual policy. Notify incidents promptly through the policy contact or Claims Centre; preserve relevant records and observe separate carrier, contractual and legal deadlines. Portal submission does not extend those deadlines or confirm a claim is covered.
Cancellation rights, notice periods and return premiums depend on the policy and applicable law. Request a written calculation of any refund or charges and confirmation of the effective cancellation date. Commercial marine cover does not necessarily carry the same cancellation rights as a consumer product.
Questions and disputes
Raise service concerns through the Complaints page. The responsible insurer's dispute process and any external scheme depend on the named provider, your eligibility and the nature of the complaint. Mandatory rights under applicable law are not excluded by these website terms.
