Marine Fleet Insurance: what to consider
Marine fleet insurance coordinates cover for several vessels under an agreed programme structure. It can simplify a managed fleet’s presentation, but should not hide differences between vessel ages, types, trades and loss experience. A good schedule lets the underwriter assess each vessel alongside the operation of the fleet as a whole.
Prepare a vessel-by-vessel schedule
List IMO, flag, class, age, value and trading area for every vessel. Identify chartered versus owned interests, laid-up ships and planned acquisitions or disposals. Adding a vessel to an internal spreadsheet does not automatically attach it to an insurance policy.
Review common terms and exceptions
Shared renewal dates and administration can be useful, while deductibles or conditions may still vary by vessel. Ask how additions, deletions, value changes and lay-up are handled. Explain management controls and separate isolated casualties from recurring causes in the fleet loss record.
Cover to discuss for Fleet Insurance
- Individual H&M interests arranged within the agreed fleet structure.
- Vessel schedules and coordinated renewal or reporting arrangements.
- Separate liability, war-risk and loss-of-hire requirements where requested.
Limits, exclusions and related cover
A fleet discount does not automatically apply to liability or additional war-risk premiums. Aggregation limits, different trading areas and vessel-specific exclusions still matter. Changes to the insured fleet must follow agreed notification and acceptance procedures.
Prepare your Fleet Insurance enquiry
- Complete vessel schedule with values, IMO, class and trading areas.
- Management / maintenance systems and vessel-level five-year claims.
- Renewal dates, planned fleet changes and requested common terms.
Start your Fleet Insurance application and save the information securely. For an existing incident, use the Claims Centre and follow the reporting requirements in your policy.
