Tanker Insurance: what to consider
Tanker insurance describes a programme, not one interchangeable policy. A crude tanker, product tanker and chemical tanker can have different machinery, cargo-handling systems and operational constraints. Start with physical damage cover, then identify the P&I, pollution and war-risk arrangements needed for the vessel’s employment.
Describe tanker-specific operations
Tell the underwriter about cargoes carried, tank coatings, heating systems, inert gas equipment and planned cleaning. Vetting history, terminal restrictions and ship-to-ship operations help distinguish a vessel’s actual service from its headline tonnage and age.
Coordinate the separate interests
A tanker owner’s hull policy does not insure the trader’s cargo by default. Adding war-risk hull cover does not automatically resolve war P&I or cargo war requirements. Compare insured parties, trading limits and attachment periods across each proposed contract.
Cover to discuss for Tanker Insurance
- Hull and machinery damage for the tanker and its scheduled equipment.
- P&I and pollution liability enquiries coordinated with vessel operations.
- Separate war-risk or loss-of-hire requirements where requested.
Limits, exclusions and related cover
Cargo contamination, off-hire, charterparty penalties and pollution are not automatically benefits of tanker H&M. Several covers within one programme still have their own deductibles, exclusions and notification requirements.
Prepare your Tanker Insurance enquiry
- IMO, flag, class, age, deadweight and tanker type.
- Cargo history, vetting / inspection reports and maintenance information.
- Owner / manager details, trading areas, insured value and loss record.
Start your Tanker Insurance application and save the information securely. For an existing incident, use the Claims Centre and follow the reporting requirements in your policy.
