Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Insurance

Liability protection starts with understanding the people, cargo and third parties affected by your vessel’s operations.

Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Insurance: what to consider

Protection and indemnity insurance addresses specified legal liabilities arising from operating a ship. An injured crew member, damaged cargo or contact with port infrastructure creates a different insurance question from damage to the vessel itself. Owners and operators need a liability entry that reflects their actual service, contractual commitments and trading areas.

Build the liability picture

Crew numbers, passenger operations, cargo types, vessel tonnage and contractual responsibilities shape the exposure. Offshore work, towage and specialist activities need particular attention because standard terms may not accommodate every operation or indemnity accepted by the operator.

Check the evidence required by counterparties

Ports, flag administrations and commercial counterparties may ask for particular evidence of financial security. Tell the team exactly which certificate or contractual requirement applies. A general P&I quotation is not, by itself, confirmation that a specific statutory document can be issued.

Cover to discuss for Protection & Indemnity

  • Crew and third-party injury, illness or death liabilities within the agreed entry.
  • Liability for cargo carried, pollution or wreck removal where the wording responds.
  • Defence costs and incident expenses where authorised and insured.

Limits, exclusions and related cover

P&I does not ordinarily replace hull damage or a cargo owner’s property insurance. Contractual liabilities, sanctions, fines, specialist operations and war exclusions need individual review. Limits and deductibles can differ between liability categories.

Prepare your Protection & Indemnity enquiry

  • Vessel schedule with IMO, gross tonnage, flag and operating description.
  • Crew / passenger information, management details and relevant contracts.
  • Five-year claims record, required liability limits and certificate requests.

Start your Protection & Indemnity application and save the information securely. For an existing incident, use the Claims Centre and follow the reporting requirements in your policy.

PRODUCT QUESTIONS

Protection & Indemnity FAQs

Why is P&I not priced as a fixed percentage?

Liability exposure depends on operations, tonnage, people, contracts and claims as well as chosen limits. Vessel market value alone does not measure those risks.

Is cargo liability the same as cargo insurance?

No. Cargo liability concerns a carrier’s insured legal responsibility. Cargo insurance protects the cargo owner’s insured interest, subject to its own terms.

Can specialist vessel operations be considered?

Describe the work, equipment and contractual indemnities before quoting. Offshore construction, towage and other specialist activities can require additional cover or different terms.
