Marine Insurance Comparisons: Cover, Quotes & Process
Compare the insured interest, coverage basis and acceptance conditions before comparing marine insurance prices. A cheaper-looking percentage is not a like-for-like comparison if the value, period, deductible or covered exposure differs.
Hull & Machinery versus P&I
H&M addresses the ship as insured property. P&I addresses specified third-party liabilities arising from operating ships, such as crew injury, cargo liability, pollution or wreck removal under the applicable terms. One is not a substitute for the other; check the allocation of collision and property liabilities.

Marine cargo versus hull insurance
Cargo insurance concerns the insured goods; hull insurance concerns the insured vessel. A trader with goods on a chartered ship and the shipowner can have separate financial interests in the same voyage. Identify who bears the risk under the sale and carriage arrangements before choosing a product.
War risk versus standard hull cover
Ask which policy covers the cause of loss and whether a separate war-risk section, policy or extension is needed. Comparing two premiums without checking their perils, territorial restrictions and cancellation terms can hide a material coverage gap. Consult the actual clause references and editions.

Indicative estimate versus formal terms
An estimate is a numerical result from inputs and calculation settings. A calculated dashboard quote records an application’s price and acceptance step, but it does not grant binding authority. Actual insurer authorization, the agreed wording and satisfaction of binding conditions are still needed before policy issuance. Payment confirmation alone is not cover.
Online versus a conventional enquiry process
Online calculation lets you see the initial arithmetic and collect application facts in one place. A conventional enquiry may collect the same facts through calls or email. Both routes still require accurate disclosure, appropriate terms and authorized binding; a digital form does not eliminate underwriting.
MarineEnergyCover lets you calculate publicly, submit an application, follow its status and access documents through the portal. The useful comparison is the clarity and completeness of your submission, not an unsupported promise that online insurance always binds faster.
Voyage versus annual arrangements
A voyage enquiry is tied to a described shipment or transit. An annual arrangement requires a clear exposure and declaration basis across its agreed period. Compare limits per shipment, accumulation, routes, exclusions and reporting obligations, rather than comparing percentages alone. The existing voyage-versus-annual guide develops this comparison in more detail.
A practical comparison checklist
- Use the same insured interest, value basis and currency.
- Match the coverage period and territorial scope.
- Compare limits, deductibles and exclusions, including any war-risk component.
- Identify the insurer, wording version and outstanding conditions.
- Separate premium, fees, tax and payment timing.
- Check who can authorize binding and the agreed effective date.
Indicative premium estimate only. Final premium and coverage are subject to underwriting approval, vessel specifications, route, claims history, policy limits, deductibles, capacity availability and final policy terms.
